Sonia is an experienced company director and lawyer.
Sonia has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Melbourne and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FACID).
She is a member of the Melbourne University Law School Foundation Board and serves as faculty with the Australian Institute of Company Directors, teaching the Company Directors Course.
On 26 January 2026, Sonia was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for signficant service to the law, and to the finance and business sectors.
Sonia runs her own commercial legal practice Sonia Petering Lawyer assisting in environmental law - particuarly native vegetation offsets.
Her board career spans highly regulated industries including financial services, insurance, life insurance, water utilities and healthcare, professional services, intellecutal property, life sciences and payments.
Past board roles include Chair of Vitrafy Life Sciences Limited (ASX:VRT), Chair of Virtus Health Ltd (ASX:VRT) for 3 years, director for 8 years,Chair of QantmIP Ltd (ASX:QIP) for 2.5 years director for over 8 years, Rural Finance Corporation of Victoria (Chair for 6 years, director for over 11 years), Transport Accident Commission of Victoria (director for 9 years), TAL (Australia's largest life insurer, director for 10 years), Cuscal Ltd and GWMWater.
She was a member of the first Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry with Justice Bernard Teague and Professor John Catford in 2014. Sonia also undertakes various other discrete governance projects including assisting Victorian government departments with the appointment of non executive directors to water corporation boards and TAFE boards across Victoria. Sonia assisted in setting up Australia's first community bank, an initiatve with Bendigo Bank Sonia is a member of Chief Executive Women (CEW), and a mentor with Kilfinan Australia.
